  • The Diocese of Providence announced upcoming church changes — Saint Thomas in Warren will merge into Saint Mary of the Bay, East Providence’s Saint Brendan and Saint Martha parishes will combine, and Saint Kateri in Exeter will be suppressed with records moved to Saint Bernard in North Kingstown.  Downtown Providence

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A development group led by former Mayor Joseph Paolino will buy the historic Providence Place mall for $133 million to revitalize the site with apartments, retail stores and enhanced parking. The plan includes attracting Costco to boost downtown activity in the building designed by Friedrich St. Florian.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 10, the 'Real Housewives of Rhode Island' filmed an episode in Newport featuring scenes at Seaview Terrace, a Salve Regina campus location, and on a party boat in Narragansett Bay + crews captured scenic shots along the Newport Cliff Walk.  The Providence Journal
  • Yesterday, episode 7 of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island showed the cast in Newport easing tensions after a heated fight and confronting shocking video evidence — a clip that raised concerns about a personal affair. The series will continue to explore evolving alliances on its upcoming episode.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island state beaches will reopen this Memorial Day weekend starting Saturday, May 23, with full amenities and lifeguards as RIDEM upgrades facilities & expands parking access. Improvements include a new boardwalk at Roger Wheeler and expanded lanes at Misquamicut to enhance visitor convenience.  The Providence Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Brown University announced a $12 million gift from the Orlando Bravo family foundation to support funded faculty positions and its proposed new economics building that would replace four Fox Point homes. The plan has sparked neighborhood opposition.  Go Local Prov

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rhode Island FC tied 1-1 with Tampa Bay Rowdies on May 10 at Centreville Bank Stadium when JJ Williams scored a late goal in the 86th minute. The team now prepares to face Portland Hearts of Pine on Saturday, May 16 at 4 p.m.  The Providence Journal
