- ➤ Warren Galkin, a Providence native and Navy veteran who helped rebuild Japan’s navy—shaping Cold War diplomacy—died at age 95. He became a respected business leader and philanthropist who supported veteran causes and community programs. The Providence Journal
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A bicyclist was hit by a car Sunday at the intersection of Central Avenue and Benefit Street in Pawtucket around 7 p.m.—dashcam footage showed him being thrown into the air and he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive. ABC 6
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Providence Police responded to reports of shots fired into a vehicle on Daboll Street on May 10—no injuries were reported—and are investigating the incident. ABC 6
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Boston Globe Rhode Island team won 43 awards (including 18 first-place finishes) at the Rhode Island Press Association contest for work published in 2024. The awards recognized excellence in areas like investigative reporting, community journalism, and sports and were presented on May 9 at the Quonset O Club in North Kingstown. The Boston Globe
- ➤ Mother's Day marked the start of the ninth annual Quahog Week in Rhode Island—an event hosted by the Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island Seafood Marketing Collaborative that highlights the cultural and economic value of the state's official clam. - ➤ Providence drivers see North Main Street signs although tax records show the street is named Capt. J. Carleton Davis Memorial Boulevard to honor a World War I hero. The misnaming dates back to 1920s street improvements — leaving little to mark Davis' sacrifice. The Providence Journal
- ➤ RIDOT announced traffic changes on the Broad Street Bridge, Eddy Street Bridge, and the Providence Viaduct service road beginning May 16. The shifts move all Broad Street traffic to the northbound side, close bike lanes, and detour southbound vehicles via Thurbers, Broad, and Baker Streets — work will conclude in 2028. ABC 6
