COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Breaking Bread, started last year by Akanksha Aga, offers six-week leadership mentorship sessions mainly online for local professionals; occasional in-person events at venues like Track 15 help participants build skills in an affordable, pay-what-you-can format.  The Boston Globe
  • Foster Parrots Ltd. has opened its new and larger New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton to house 400 birds and other animals, after a devastating 2021 fire reduced their space — the new 28,000 sqft facility cost $9 million and offers twice the room for birds with medical needs.  The Providence Journal
  • The Diocese of Providence announced parish changes. In Warren, Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish will join Saint Mary of the Bay Parish, in East Providence Saints Brendan and Martha Parishes will merge, and in Foster the Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Community will dissolve with records at Saint Bernard Parish.  10 WJAR

  • Disney's The Lion King will run at Providence Performing Arts Center from May 20 through June 7, starring lead actor Gilbert Domally as Simba after two years as an understudy; the 2.5-hour production promises memorable songs and engaging stagecraft.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown University researchers found that Medicaid expansion reduced one-year death rates among young adults with kidney failure by 1.8 percentage points (improving pre-dialysis care and longer dialysis sessions) from 2010 to 2019.  Brown University
  • Three top Rhode Island healthcare leaders warned that without quick action from state lawmakers, hospitals risk steep cuts in services and jobs. They said an infusion of $200 million is needed to stabilize the system + keep patient care on track.  Go Local Prov

  • Olivia Culpo, a former Miss Universe and local native, announced she and Christian McCaffrey are expecting their second child soon. They welcomed their first daughter last year after marrying in Westerly two summers ago.  10 WJAR

  • Providence baseball fans can now vote online through Friday for the Week 6 Longplex Athlete of the Week as five nominees from local teams—including West Warwick, Barrington, Narragansett, Woonsocket and East Providence—compete after last week’s winner, Anthony DeLuca, earned 51% of over 6,400 votes.  The Providence Journal
  • Statewide high school softball rankings show Chariho topping Division I and Lincoln leading Division II as teams gear up with upcoming matches this week. Fans will watch La Salle+St. Raphael, Tiverton, and others compete in key games as the season nears its close.  The Providence Journal
