CRIME NEWS

  • Craig Clayton, 75, of Cranston, pleaded guilty on May 8 to one count of money laundering conspiracy and one count of obstruction of justice for using shell companies to hide over $35 million from internet fraud scams—his sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 13.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Providence Promise is working to remove barriers to education and give more chances for students to succeed—its creative programs have shown impressive results in less than 10 years. Kyle Bennett of United Way of Rhode Island highlighted the nonprofit’s efforts as a strong step toward a better future for Providence.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island House voted 72—0 on Tuesday to reject pay raises for Governor McKee’s Cabinet, covering 11 department directors. The Senate has not yet set a vote and will decide by Thursday—if it takes no action, the raises will take effect.  The Boston Globe
  • On Tuesday, May 13, the Rhode Island House voted 68—0 to block Gov. Dan McKee's proposed pay raises for 11 cabinet members amid a looming deficit, leaving the Senate with the decision before the May 18 deadline. Nine cabinet heads would receive a 5% raise, the Transportation director a 2% raise, and the State Police superintendent a 0.5% raise if the Senate does not act.  Rhode Island PBS
  • On May 14th, the Providence City Council Chamber flew the Palestinian flag next to the council president’s dais—adding to the traditional display of the American, state, and city flags. A spokesman said the council is handling questions about who purchased the flag while neither Mayor Smiley nor Council President Miller has commented.  Go Local Prov
  • Rhode Island's IT department is asking the General Assembly to approve 15 new full-time hires for fiscal 2026 to replace contractor roles after a data breach last December. The proposal is budget-neutral and will be funded by an internal service fund (not from general revenue), aiming to save costs and strengthen IT security.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Bill Bartholomew—a popular local podcaster and radio host at WPRO—is considering a run against incumbent Sabina Matos for lieutenant governor next year. He has not yet opened a campaign account and would need to build a strong fundraising effort in a race expected to attract multiple candidates.  The Boston Globe
