COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Upgraded amenities and an expanded boardwalk will welcome visitors to state beaches in Narragansett and Westerly on Memorial Day weekend. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will finish additional work in June + seasonal services and paid parking return.  The Providence Journal
  • The East Providence community dedicated a playground at Grassy Plains Park to honor 5-year-old Blake Costa, who died in 2020 after his battle with brain cancer.  10 WJAR
  • Rhode Island law advises that if you receive an unexpected package, you may keep it if it is addressed to you but must return it if it is meant for someone else (federal law prohibits opening mail not intended for you).  The Providence Journal
  • Protesters gathered outside the Providence State House yesterday to oppose the removal of a partially finished mural honoring Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee stabbed to death on a train in North Carolina in 2025—building owners agreed to take it down after officials raised concerns over its political funding.  10 WJAR

  • Dari Bee Ice Cream in East Providence reopened yesterday after months of renovations. The historic shop (open since 1960) celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Bob DaSilva and unveiled new outdoor seating along with a refreshed exterior design coordinated by the public works department.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a tragedy three months ago that bonded the players, the Blackstone Valley Boys hockey team officially decided to stay together despite earlier talk of a potential split. The head coach said this commitment will help keep the team united for upcoming challenges.  10 WJAR
  • State champions will be crowned Sunday at Slater Park in the finals of the 2026 RIIL Boys Tennis Tournament (singles and doubles), with Brayden Lynch facing Luca Testa in the singles final and East Greenwich’s Levy brothers competing against La Salle’s Gavin Britt with Connor Cavanagh in doubles.  The Providence Journal
