ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three people, including a teacher and two students, were taken to local hospitals after a tablet or laptop emitting smoke was reported at DelSesto Middle School — firefighters responded quickly — and officials are investigating the cause.  10 WJAR

CRIME NEWS

  • Jury selection is underway in the trial of Marcus Huffman Jones, a Providence man accused of stabbing his roommate Kenneth McClain on Superior Street in August 2021—police said McClain collapsed when officers arrived and later died in the hospital.  ABC 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Providence College’s commencement weekend, Judge Frank Caprio encouraged over 1,000 graduates to be kind as they start their new lives and was honored when officials retired a jersey with his name on it—his speech sparked what was called the largest standing ovation in the school's history. Other local institutions also held their own ceremonies over the weekend.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Butler Hospital on the East Side notified about 800 striking workers that their health benefits will end on June 1—workers will also receive their last paycheck on May 23 as the strike over wages and safety continues.  The Public's Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Online voting for the Providence Journal boys volleyball player of the week opened Monday and will close Friday at 11:59 p.m. + Home coaches are asked to email match results after games to help nominate standout players during the season.  The Providence Journal
  • The RIIL Boys Tennis playoffs are on—Division II quarterfinals happened on Monday, May 19 and quarterfinal matches in Divisions I, II and III are held today with semifinals coming later this week and championships set for Saturday, May 31 at Slater Park.  The Providence Journal
