EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lindsay Paiva (new union head) was elected in a three-candidate race and will lead the Providence Teachers Union through the state takeover of public schools scheduled to end in 2027 while supporting a charter pause amid planned layoffs and budget reviews.  The Boston Globe
  • The Rhode Island Department of Education proposes that Providence schools return to local control on June 30, 2027 + a transition plan starting July 1, 2026 is under review with the Senate Education Committee holding a hearing today on a bill to move the current end date from October 2027.  The Boston Globe
  • Dr. Francesca L. Beaudoin, who served as interim dean since Jan. 1, is named dean of Brown’s School of Public Health effective June 1. She will oversee academic programs, research centers, and student initiatives to boost public health research and education.  Brown University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Providence starting at 11 a.m. today as temperatures may reach 90 degrees and the heat index 96, increasing heat illness risk. The state DEM forecasts unhealthy air quality (due to elevated ozone) and urges residents to limit outdoor activities.  The Providence Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Zillow found Providence is the hottest summer rental market because more people want homes than there are deals available, with typical rents at $2,154 a month. The report shows rents rose 5 percent over the last year as few property managers offer concessions.  The Boston Globe

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, May 19, local high school baseball saw Cranston West claim a 12 to 10 win that sent the Falcons to the playoffs while North Kingstown secured an upset victory. Other divisions and a softball match added to an action-packed day of school sports (playoffs begin Friday).  The Providence Journal
  • East Greenwich boys lacrosse won a double-overtime game against Westerly on May 19 as Micah Dawson scored the winning goal to secure a 9-8 victory and boost the team's playoff hopes in the Division II tournament.  The Providence Journal
  • Boston Legacy FC will bring professional women's soccer to Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, marking the first match of its seven-game summer series with a debut against Seattle Reign FC on May 22, 8 p.m. (Historic debut for the league).  Rhode Island PBS
