COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence is hosting a FIFA-approved World Cup FanZone at Station Park from June 11 to July 19 with security checks and rideshare zones. City officials announced Finance Way closures and RIPTA detours on key routes from June 1 to July 30 to manage traffic and ensure safety.  Downtown Providence
  • The Boys and Girls Clubs of Northern RI is dedicated to helping youth develop skills + offers creative programs in arts, sports and education. Today, Woonsocket's Clubhouse director Bonnie Piekarski highlights the need for community support as the nonprofit works to expand its impact in our area.  The Providence Journal
  • Communities in RI plan Memorial Day parades, ceremonies and special events on Monday, May 25, including parades in Barrington, East Greenwich and North Providence, a 5K run at Fort Adams and outdoor festivals in Newport and Pawtuxet Park. Volunteers are needed to set up displays to honor fallen service members.  The Providence Journal

  • Matunuck Oyster Bar owner Perry Raso said inspections for the original restaurant will be completed by Aug. 31 so that it reopens in September (marking a year since the fire).  10 WJAR

  • Pawtucket school officials are set to extend the school day and school year to regain five minutes of daily instruction discovered in April, as well as recover time lost from snow delays (estimated extra costs total about $255,000).  The Boston Globe

  • Gov. McKee confirmed that Providence Public Schools will return under district control during NBC 10's Connect to the Capitol broadcast & discussed former House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi's consideration for a vacant Supreme Court seat & plans for the Newport Birthing Center.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island faces a growing Alzheimer’s crisis as over 24,000 residents are affected and 37,000 caregivers provide support. Lawmakers propose a full-time Dementia Services Coordinator in the Health Department — a role designed to improve service coordination and secure federal funds for lasting dementia care.  Go Local Prov

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • RI's spring housing market shows rising home prices and low inventory, with the median single-family home price reaching $529,000 in April, making ownership elusive for many. The defeat of a proposed rent stabilization law in Providence has reduced owner-occupier incentives as condo and multi-family markets also remain tight.  The Providence Journal
