BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wally's Wieners, a hot dog and martini restaurant, opens today on Federal Hill at 120 Atwells Ave in a renovated space that honors the historic Old Canteen + the first new restaurant there in 69 years. It serves comfort food like hot dogs, fries, chicken sandwiches and smashburgers and offers free valet parking for May 23, 24 and 25, with daily hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and until 1 a.m. on weekends.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A Guatemalan man detained by ICE after an agent smashed a car window had his hearing postponed until September plus his bond hearing is set for May 29 to decide on the removal of his ankle monitor, even though he remains in custody despite a judge’s order for his release after being arrested while taking his wife to a dentist.  ABC 6
  • The Department of Children, Youth & Families announced on May 22 that a 3-month-old died on April 5 from malnutrition due to maltreatment, marking the second child fatality in one month after a death on April 25.  Go Local Prov
  • A Cranston public schools dean, Vincent L. Turchetta, Jr., 61, pleaded no contest to reckless driving and related public safety charges at Kent County District Court after he was arrested in March for drunken driving when officers found him passed out behind the wheel of an SUV—his case will be filed for one year with no further loss of license if he avoids additional incidents.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Providence Public Schools cut daily substitute teacher pay from $140 to $130 just days before school began and some subs have chosen to look for work elsewhere while others remain for their students—data shows the substitute pool fell from 366 last year to 274 so far. The new tiered pay structure, which raises rates after more days worked, has raised concerns as nearby districts offer higher daily rates.  10 WJAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, a rare May nor’easter hit Rhode Island with wind gusts over 40 mph and up to 2 inches of rain, bringing heavy showers before the storm passed today and left patchy drizzle ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Local forecasters said the winter-like setup prompted caution on slick roads.  Rhode Island PBS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds of Butler Hospital workers have been on strike since May 15 after 91% of the union voted to strike when contract talks ended on May 7; they demand higher wages, increased staffing, and better safety for handling rising workplace violence. Hospital officials say temporary workers will maintain patient care while striking staff face loss of benefits and pay starting today—moves that increase pressure to resume negotiations.  The Providence Journal
