ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Matunuck Oyster Bar suffered extensive fire, water and smoke damage in a two‐alarm blaze that began just before 4 a.m. Tuesday with no injuries—fire officials noted the restaurant did not require sprinklers based on its occupancy and that support funds have been launched to aid repairs ahead of summer tourism.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • Providence police searched an area on Brookway Road off Blackstone Boulevard on Friday for missing 5-year-old Saveliy Kostrov using police dogs and police tape- anyone with information was asked to call the Youth Service Bureau at 401-272-3121.  ABC 6
  • Skyla Gilroy, a 24-year-old Cranston woman convicted of a deadly hit-and-run in 2020, was sentenced on Friday to four years in prison—she will also face two years of home confinement, lose her license for three years and must get a mental health evaluation.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The RISD Graduate Thesis Show opened its reception on May 21 at the RI Convention Center — it will run daily from May 22 to May 28 between 12 and 5pm and on May 29 from 12 to 3pm.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence welcomed 12 Humboldt penguins at the Roger Williams Park Zoo as the new Penguin Point Exhibit opened Friday—five penguins are on display with seven more arriving from other zoos, and visitors can enjoy an underwater viewing area. The three-year project will be a popular summer stop for guests.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University will confer 3,310 degrees at its 257th Commencement today and tomorrow with ceremonies held across campus. More than 1,000 master's degrees will be awarded today on the College Green — with undergraduate, doctoral, medical and honorary ceremonies scheduled for tomorrow.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Brett Smiley signed an executive order on Friday that sets new rules for flags at City Hall after a controversial display of a Palestinian flag last week. Under the order, only the American, city and Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flags may fly without special approval while other flags must have a mayoral proclamation or City Council resolution—flags can remain for 24 hours unless otherwise noted.  The Boston Globe
  • Mayor Brett Smiley issued an executive order on May 23 that sets a flag policy for City Hall, allowing only flags from governments recognized by the U.S. or those linked to official city events and requiring a mayoral proclamation + City Council resolution for display. The policy comes after City Council members flew a Palestinian flag on May 16 and mandates that all such displays be removed within 24 hours unless stated otherwise.  The Providence Journal
