  • A stretch of Portsmouth shoreline will reopen to shell fishing after meeting water testing standards—the first time since 1975—though longtime quahogger Mark Johnson said skepticism remains amid record low harvests and an aging workforce.  10 WJAR
  • The Hotel for Homeless Dogs in Cumberland is over capacity and urgently calls for foster homes as it temporarily places new rescues in crates, since it can house only 17 dogs while caring for more than 100 waiting for adoption.  10 WJAR
  • Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee dedicated the Christine Conrad Lane Memorial Dog Park on Saturday to honor victims of a D.C. plane crash, with the park at Haines Memorial State Park near the boat ramp in Barrington. Friends of Barrington Dog Park are seeking donations for upkeep.  10 WJAR

  • Journalist Mark Patinkin has covered topics from world news to local favorites, showing his long career that ties major events to everyday life in Rhode Island. His work blends international coverage with local charm (highlighting his unique perspective).  The Providence Journal
  • German U-boat U-853 sank the last U.S. merchant ship in World War II by hitting the collier Black Point off Point Judith on May 5 + was later neutralized near Block Island, leaving a 121-ft wreck. Historian Tim Gray suggests U-boats may have explored Narragansett Bay before U.S. entry.  The Providence Journal

  • Bestselling author and Brown alumna Xochitl Gonzalez spoke at the Baccalaureate on May 22 to remind graduates to keep their curiosity alive as a compass for life. Her talk, 'The Importance of Being Nosey: Curiosity as a Habit,' set a thoughtful tone during a weekend of graduation events.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 23, the Rhode Island Homelessness Advocacy Project held a press conference in Providence, urging the city to halt sweeps of unhoused people at Kennedy Plaza & Burnside Park ahead of the FIFA World Cup while calling for more shelter beds and accountability funds; city officials said they work with outreach teams to offer services.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island recorded 2,563 Lyme disease cases in 2024; an MIT researcher will launch LymeAlert (a rapid at-home test that detects the infection in 15 minutes) with 5,000 kits shipping by August. Health officials advise doing tick checks and wearing pre-treated clothing after outdoor activities.  The Providence Journal
  • A stray cat found under a homeowner's deck in Burrillville tested positive for rabies on May 22 after biting a person near Whipple Road (the victim has begun treatment) and officials advise anyone who had contact to call the local health unit.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • RIIL playoffs on Saturday saw strong pitching and timely hitting deliver tight finishes in baseball and softball contests. Johnston won 2 to 1 over the Titans — and wins also came for Smithfield, St. Raphael, South Kingstown, and Middletown, with boys tennis quarterfinals resuming Sunday at 12 p.m. at Hendricken.  The Providence Journal
