COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 21, tenants at the income- and age-restricted Etta Apartments formed a new union after raising concerns about new management. Organizers led the rally and local officials listened to calls for better tenant treatment.  The Providence Journal
  • Crescent Park Carousel in East Providence is open for the 2026 season, operating on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6:00 p.m. The last ride is at 5:45 p.m., tickets cost $2 per person, and kids under 3 ride free.  10 WJAR
  • The Providence Journal’s 54th annual Summertime Fund is now welcoming donations to help send needy children to camp. Mail contributions to the Rhode Island Foundation at One Union Station + donate online to support a memorable summer.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The new episode of Real Housewives of Rhode Island aired May 24 and showed filming spots in Cranston, South Kingstown and Boston — setting up friction before trivia night at Audrey’s Coffee House and Lounge. Scenic views including the Beavertail Lighthouse and downtown spots enhanced the episode’s flair.  The Providence Journal
  • On May 20, Ashley Iaconetti said on the Chicks in the Office podcast that the affair shown on season one of Real Housewives was based on events that ended last summer—confirming that the drama was outdated.  The Providence Journal
  • Episode 9 of Real Housewives turned turbulent as a tense dinner at Circe Prime in Cranston led to a heated clash at trivia night (Audrey's) where Kelsey and Rosie exchanged personal accusations.  10 WJAR
  • Operation Stand Down RI has marked its 10th year by displaying over 7,000 combat boots at Fort Adams in Newport to honor soldiers killed in the Global War on Terror, offering a quiet space for local reflection on historical sacrifice.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its 258th Commencement on Sunday, May 24, Brown University conferred honorary doctorates on six leaders from national security, business, economics, civil rights law, and artificial intelligence (each recognized for their significant contributions). The degrees were presented by University President Christina H. Paxson during the ceremony.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, flags at public buildings across Rhode Island fly at half-staff from sunrise until noon to honor military personnel on Memorial Day, following federal guidelines & longstanding tradition.  The Providence Journal
  • Since 1976, Rhode Island has banned hold-open clips on gas pumps because they pose fire risks (when pumps fail to shut off, gas can spill); a 2015 law allowed them only on special nozzles that are now gone, while New York is considering ending its ban, leaving Rhode Island alone.  The Providence Journal

  • On May 23 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island FC secured a 4+1 win over Brooklyn FC as Kwizera scored a late goal after a tied finish. Coach Ugarte said the team will build momentum in upcoming games at Indy Eleven, Westchester SC and Loudoun United FC.  The Providence Journal
