CRIME NEWS

  • Warwick police arrested 30-year-old Michael Gast, Jr. on May 27 after he allegedly assaulted officers at his Negansett Avenue residence on a 911 hang-up call — a search found a dead dog, a dead parrot, and several live animals, and he now faces charges including animal cruelty, simple assault, and resisting arrest.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Unions, tourism, sports and arts leaders opposed a ticket tax bill introduced by the Providence City Council on May 29 that would tax events held in venues with over 800 seats—critics say this measure could hurt local events and small businesses by discouraging ticket sales. The debate has raised concerns that the tax will signal Rhode Island is unfriendly to cultural and sporting events.  Go Local Prov
  • Advocates gathered at the State House on May 29 to urge lawmakers for a 3% tax on high earners that would raise about $190 million for RIPTA, Medicaid and schools—Attorney General Peter Neronha also outlined a bill to raise Medicaid payments for primary care doctors.
