COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since Monday, Finance Way from Francis Street to Exchange Street has been closed for the FIFA FanZone — set up at Station Park across from Providence Place. Fans will use mall parking or a rideshare drop-off zone to join the World Cup celebration.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence’s Old State House underwent a $4m restoration that installed an elevator and ADA bathrooms after 20 months of work — commission staff expect to return full time by the end of June.  The Boston Globe
  • Providence photo lovers can explore a curated list of top sunrise and sunset locations including the Providence Pedestrian Bridge, Prospect Terrace Park, and Rocky Point State Park. The guide highlights viewpoints from urban skylines to seaside vistas, inviting residents to capture stunning shots today.  Downtown Providence
  • Despite some morning rain, revelers attended Porchfest on May 30 at Providence’s East Side — bands played on porches and streets were closed for safety. The event showcased local music and community spirit.  The Providence Journal
  • Deer Tick will release their album Coin-O-Matic on June 5; the record honors Providence with gritty, heartfelt songs. The band will launch a summer tour with three album release shows at Ocean Mist in Matunuck June 5-7.  Downtown Providence

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A WalletHub report released on Monday compared 50 states and found that Rhode Island ranked 47th & Massachusetts topped the list, using 28 indicators like GDP growth and startup activity to gauge economic performance.  Go Local Prov

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (2020 presidential candidate) endorsed Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos and Mayor Brett Smiley for re-election on Monday, June 1 in Providence while the Providence Teachers Union backed challenger David Morales, citing his focus on student and teacher well-being.  The Providence Journal
  • On May 21, the Rhode Island Senate passed a bill requiring grocery stores and select retailers, including Target and Walmart, to add one staffed lane per three self-checkouts. The bill now moves to the House to support both cashiers and customers.  10 WJAR
