CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Providence will host PVDFest on Sept. 5-6—offering musical performances, a battle of the bands, a hip hop competition, over 180 craft vendors and dozens of food trucks. The festival will also include a Drink Rink designed by Anthony Santurri, a large mural unveiling with a live paint-off, and a multimedia spectacle by Squonk—inviting festivalgoers to join the vibrant celebration.  The Boston Globe
  • Political leaders in Rhode Island celebrated the start of Pride Month Tuesday morning at the State House when Governor Dan McKee signed a proclamation with Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos and community members in attendance—officially recognizing June as Pride Month in the state.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ACLU filed a lawsuit in Providence County Superior Court challenging Brown University Police’s practice of keeping arrest reports hidden after two journalists were denied access. Brown said its officers are exempt from state records law because they act as a private agency — a stance critics say may conceal important arrest details.  Rhode Island PBS
  • State officials launched Ocean State 2026 to boost tourism and economic growth during the 2026 World Cup, which features seven matches at Gillette Stadium from June 13 to July 9. Commerce Secretary Liz Tanner—leaving her post on July 4—to lead the nonprofit and General Treasurer James Diossa as board chair will coordinate with local agencies and business groups to prepare for the influx of about 1 million international fans.  Rhode Island PBS
  • The Rhode Island Senate will vote today on a tax credit bill that lets developers waive sales taxes on construction materials to help finance the $270M-plus redevelopment of Providence’s vacant Superman building into 285 mixed-income apartments. Supporters say this change is the final piece needed to complete the project—while some lawmakers remain cautious about further public subsidies.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Senate President Val Lawson, who is also head of a teachers union, must decide if she will use her vote to push an assault weapons ban into law when the House passes the bill tomorrow. She faces pressure from gun safety supporters and gun rights allies as a tied Senate committee leaves her final vote as a tough choice—one that will shape the law's future.  The Boston Globe

  • The 63rd Northeast Amateur Invitational golf tournament is set for June 18-21 at Wannamoisett Country Club and will feature top collegiate, junior and mid-amateur players including returning champion Anthony Delisanti and runner-up Bryan Lee—organizers appointed Mick Hogan as co-chair with longtime chair Ben Tuthill as they prepare for one of the strongest fields this summer.  ABC 6
