Good morning, Providence. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.

- ➤ Mario Demarco, a 30-year-old Romanian who used skimming devices on ATMs on the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic to steal banking details from hundreds, was sentenced on Tuesday in Providence to 33 months in federal prison—he will also face deportation and pay $16,567 in restitution. The Boston Globe
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Providence Public Schools and the Providence Teachers Union reached a tentative three-year contract that will provide educators with phased wage increases and modest increases in employee healthcare contributions (the agreement maintains current hiring processes, class sizes, and caseloads) and District Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green said the deal supports the district’s mission for quality education. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A bill to ban rodenticides that poison birds of prey was passed by the Senate on June 3 after studies showed widespread poisoning, and advocates say it will help protect hawks and owls from deadly chemicals. The law will phase out the products by Jan. 1, 2028—with exceptions for farms, breweries, and health emergencies—while industry experts warn that the change may raise rodent-control costs. The Providence Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ RIDOT said crews will begin moving new bridge structures later this year to replace the unsafe bridges that carry the East Bay Bike Path over the Barrington and Palmer rivers. Detours have been in place since 2019 — the project cost $24 million and the bridges will reopen to the public in spring 2026. ABC 6
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Butler Hospital posted job ads to permanently replace striking nurses and said workers replaced in this way will join a preferential hire list rather than automatically return after the strike ends. The union claims the move violates labor law — as contract talks have stalled since May 15, union leaders say the change is unfair. The Boston Globe
