- ➤ Arthur Flanders of Providence was awarded the Myra Kraft Community MVP Award for his work at Nora’s Haven in Warwick—he has volunteered since 2023 as Volunteer Programming Director and at animal shelters by adopting sick pets, and he was one of 26 recipients chosen from nearly 300 applicants with the foundation donating $10,000 to the haven. - ➤ A North Providence man, Kevin Colantonio, pleaded guilty after he deliberately set fires at Shiloh Gospel Temple Ministries and threw feces and urine at two federal officers, and he was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison—followed by three years of supervised release. The Boston Globe
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Providence Teachers Union reached a tentative agreement with the public school district on a new contract that raises wages, and union members will vote on June 9 while the state education council must approve it before it goes into effect. The deal gradually increases salaries (from 1% retroactive to January, 2.25% in November, 3.75% in September, and 1.25% on the last day of school) and will expire at the close of the 2026-2027 school year. - ➤ Capt. Dave Monti offered advice on catch and release fishing in Narragansett Bay by urging anglers to use barbless hooks, wet hands, and quick handling to protect fish, while a survey of the South Fork Wind project shows the wind farm has created a reef effect that supports marine life. The Rhode Island Fish and Wildlife Aquatic Resource Education program will start its Hex Hatch workshop on June 12—teaching fly-tying skills and mayfly habits. The Providence Journal

- ➤ Passions Lounge on Plainfield Street was shut down by the Providence Board of Licenses for unsafe and improper operations — following a May shooting outside the venue — as officials noted 17 violations and allowed an appeal at the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulations. Go Local Prov
- ➤ Gov. Dan McKee and the state DOT said on Friday that Walsh Construction Company was picked to rebuild the westbound side of the Washington Bridge, which closed in December 2023 for safety reasons. The $339 million project will be finished by November 2028 with rewards for early work and fines for delays—restoring a key route. 10 WJAR
- ➤ City Councilwoman Tatiana Baena from Central Falls has introduced bills to change Rhode Island's paid family leave program, saying that workers only get 60% of their pay when they need time off. The proposals will raise pay to 70% by 2026 and 75% by 2027 and extend leave from eight to 12 weeks by 2028—steps meant to help families care for loved ones. The Boston Globe
