ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities reported a concrete stairwell collapse at a graduation party on June 7 at the Portsmouth Portuguese American Citizens Club—resulting in the death of a 15-year-old girl and injuries to three others as police and fire crews investigated the scene.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 08, a man in his 20s was shot on Broad Street in Pawtucket (a police officer was involved) and he is reportedly in stable condition.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • The annual three-day Feast of St. Joseph Festival on Federal Hill has been moved to June for the first time in 12 years to honor Italian traditions and is expected to draw 50,000 guests for food and music celebrations. Business owners have prepped extra contests including a meatball competition while a procession featuring St. Joseph’s statue — led by new Bishop Bruce Lewandowski — will mark the event.  ABC 6

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents across Rhode Island have reported black bear sightings in backyards, including in West Warwick, West Greenwich, Smithfield and Charlestown. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management advises securing trash and removing birdfeeders—measures that discourage bears from approaching homes.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • On June 8, the Hawks beat the Clippers 12-2 at Rhode Island College to close out the Division I state championship series—celebrating by raising the state championship trophy.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island-born boxing champion Vinny Paz was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, a recognition that honors his five world titles and record of 50–10 with 30 knockouts—he overcame a severe neck fracture from a 1991 car crash that nearly ended his career. His comeback fight against Luis Santa proved he could compete despite the injury.  10 WJAR
  • On June 8, La Salle won the boys track and field team championship at Brown Stadium.  The Providence Journal
  • Yesterday, high school championships ended with Woonsocket winning Division III baseball for the first time since 1986, Cranston East claiming the Division I boys volleyball title, La Salle earning its third softball crown, and Moses Brown beating La Salle for the Division I girls lacrosse win — after Saturday's weather caused delays. Some postponed games will play on Monday — adding more action to the championships.  The Providence Journal
