CRIME NEWS

  • Pawtucket police shot Sebastian Yidana on Sunday morning near Broad Street and Goff Avenue after reports said he held a plastic replica rifle, and his injury was minor—investigators from the attorney general’s office, state police, and Pawtucket police are still examining the case as the officer remains on administrative leave.  The Boston Globe
  • Chandler Cardente, a 31-year-old, pleaded guilty in March to federal charges of sexual enticement of a minor and a murder-for-hire plot after he was arrested for child molestation in Burrillville, and he will remain in prison on a 35-year state sentence—he is not expected to be released until December 2056.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee’s revised $14.2B budget proposal is set for a House Finance Committee vote on June 10 or 11 – lawmakers will address a $32M RIPTA deficit, a shortage of primary care doctors, changes to truck tolls, and a potential millionaire’s tax on incomes over $625K. The plan also proposes new fees and tax hikes to fund homeless services – further details will be clarified as committee discussions continue.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Providence Journal will hold its High School All-States Awards Show on June 18 at PPAC—where more than 300 high school athletes will be honored and Rhode Island FC midfielder Clay Holstad will share his journey as Player of the Year awards in various sports will be given.  The Providence Journal
  • Moses Brown’s girls lacrosse team won its third state championship with a 16 to 8 victory over La Salle on Sunday, using strong defense to take control of the game. Key players helped shift the momentum after a slow start and secured the win.  The Providence Journal
  • La Salle Softball beat Chariho 5-3 at Rhode Island College, giving the Rams their third straight state title and making them only the third team in state history to win three in a row. Junior pitcher Hailey Vigneau closed the game by striking out the side in the seventh inning—adding to their undefeated in-state record this season.  The Providence Journal
