ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At a graduation party at the Portsmouth Portuguese American Citizens Club, a concrete landing collapsed and killed 15-year-old Kelly Nevitt — a GoFundMe raised over $45,000 for her family as investigators worked to find why the collapse occurred.  10 WJAR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vertex plans to cut 125 jobs in Providence as part of a broader reduction of 140 positions across the state. The layoffs will take effect on Aug. 5 and the company will consolidate its offices into its site at 225 Carolina Ave—while offering severance and career help.  The Boston Globe
  • Rhode Island officials and local businesses are preparing for the 2026 World Cup as matches at Gillette Stadium may bring an influx of visitors that could nearly double the population and boost local spending. Commerce Secretary Liz Tanner is stepping down to lead Ocean State 2026—an effort to coordinate with the Rhode Island Sports Commission on plans to capture an anticipated over $1 billion impact.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A former town employee sued Mayor Charles Lombardi and Public Works Director James M. Fuoroli, claiming he was forced to work on their personal properties during town hours and that town funds were used to pay for supplies while he was fired after refusing further work. He is seeking lost wages, benefits and damages while his lawyer alleges the actions violated the Whistleblowers Protection Act—officials said they would comment later.  The Providence Journal
  • The House Finance Committee approved a balanced $14.33 billion budget for fiscal 2026 on June 11—boosting Medicaid, primary care, and housing support but cutting $500 million from Governor McKee’s proposals to buy a state building and impose a digital advertising tax. The bill reallocated funds for transportation, education, and local projects and is set for a full House vote on June 17 at 3:30 p.m.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • CODAC opened the nation’s first fully integrated community health center at 45 Royal Little Drive, where people can get a full range of health and social services—such as addiction treatment, mental health care, dentistry, food assistance, housing support, and job help—regardless of their ability to pay. The 20,628-square-foot center is backed by federal funding and local partnerships and is led by CEO Linda Hurley.  Rhode Island PBS
