CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence chef Sky Haneul Kim of Gift Horse won Best Chef: Northeast at the James Beard Awards on June 16 — making her the third Rhode Island chef to earn this honor; three local chefs were finalists at the gala held at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.  The Providence Journal
  • Kris Wilton, RISD Museum’s deputy director of audience experience and learning, said she is leading new initiatives that use digital guides and hands-on education to help visitors connect with art—efforts that encourage people to disconnect from devices and embrace immersive museum experiences. The museum plans to use these programs to show how its collections tie to creative practices in Providence and deepen understanding of each artwork’s story.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rhode Island public school districts ended or will end classes at different times this week—some finished before today while others will wrap up as late as June 23 to meet the 180-day rule. Districts adjust schedules to make up for weather delays and other closures.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island House passed a bill on June 16 that lets childhood sexual abuse victims sue those whose negligence allowed the abuse—victims now have a two-year window to file claims as the bill moves to the Senate amid staunch opposition from groups like the Catholic Church.  The Providence Journal
  • Rhode Island firefighters celebrated the delivery of a state-of-the-art support truck that will help 13 communities in northern Rhode Island respond to emergencies—refilling air cylinders and providing extra lighting, a spokesperson said. The truck was funded by a $586,363 federal grant and a $50,000 legislative grant and replaces a vehicle used for over 40 years.  ABC 6
  • Massachusetts governor Maura Healey and Rhode Island governor Dan McKee will join 10 U.S. state and Canadian provincial leaders in Boston on Monday to discuss the impact of recent tariffs and plans for energy, tourism and manufacturing—an initiative arranged after a May invitation.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown researchers are expanding access to the pediatric OCD treatment they pioneered by testing innovative methods like virtual reality and transcranial magnetic stimulation— they received an $11 million federal grant to test the model in community settings and plan to pilot home visits to train families across Rhode Island.  Brown University

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Voters advanced eight clam shacks from an initial 16 with Jim's Dock narrowly beating Anthony's Seafood and seven winners coming from South County—voting in the second round will continue until noon on Friday.  The Providence Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Providence Journal Softball Postseason MVP vote is open after the RIIL Softball Championships, and fans can vote as many times as they like until Friday night. The nominees include players from Tiverton, La Salle, and St. Raphael—each with standout postseason performances—and a winner will be announced next week.  The Providence Journal
  • Phoenyx Silva earned her second straight Gatorade Rhode Island Softball Player of the Year honor after a standout season at La Salle, where she hit .550 with a state record 21 home runs and helped lead her team to a state championship. She also maintained top grades and volunteered as a chemistry tutor—further proving her skills on and off the field.  The Providence Journal
