EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at the Rhode Island Training School researched the nearly forgotten State Farm Cemetery Annex in Cranston to create biographies for 35 people buried from 1915 to 1933 and explore themes of loss and grief. They used records from the Rhode Island Historical Commission and online sources as part of the curriculum project They Were More Than a Number (designed by Theresa Moore) and presented their findings before the school year ended.  The Boston Globe

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers amended a proposed bottle bill by replacing the 10-cent deposit with a consultant study+ while Rep. McEntee said she planned further tweaks to move up the statewide assessment deadline from Dec. 28th, 2026. A separate bill reduced Coastal Resources Management Council membership from 10 to seven with added professional criteria, drawing mixed reactions from local environmental advocates.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • David Hogg urged Rhode Island lawmakers to support a bill that bans the sale, purchase, and possession of assault-style weapons—an approach supported by many gun safety advocates—while state AFL-CIO leaders backed a competing version that limits the ban to sale and purchase; the General Assembly wrapped up its session on Friday.  The Boston Globe
  • On June 20, Senate Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III moved a bill that lets Providence raise taxes to 8% in fiscal year 2026—this may cause higher costs for renters.
