- ➤ Providence distillery ISCO transforms locally sourced oysters and seaweed into innovative small-batch spirits such as oyster vodka and seaweed gin using ingredients from nearby farms and waters — the company, which operates from a repurposed Providence Steel and Iron facility, celebrated its five-year anniversary by winning a gold medal for its pizza strip vodka. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two people were arrested after robbing a frozen lemonade truck at Roger Williams Park on Saturday—police say the suspects wore ski masks, one carried a hammer, and the victim handed over money before the duo fled in a parked vehicle. 10 WJAR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The National Weather Service declared an extreme heat warning from June 23 to 25—so Providence and East Providence have opened cooling centers for residents, with some centers open 24/7 and others running during set hours. ABC 6
- ➤ Roger Williams Park Zoo is keeping its animals cool by letting them choose whether to be indoors or outdoors and by providing water fountains and ice blocks—staff monitor the animals closely to ensure they do not overheat, using sprinklers for the elephants. ABC 6

- ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth & Families announced on Monday that a 15-year-old nearly died on June 23 while under state care—officials disclosed few details due to confidentiality laws. Go Local Prov
- ➤ Rhode Island lawmakers approved a bill banning the sale and manufacture of assault-style weapons and Gov. McKee said he will sign it despite criticism+ the measure will take effect in July to reduce the number of these firearms available. Rhode Island PBS
- ➤ The Rhode Island Senate passed a $14.3B fiscal 2026 budget last Friday with a 32-4 vote and the House approved the plan today by a 66-9 vote despite new taxes on drivers, property owners and nicotine pouch users — the budget boosts funds for health care and schools but leaves RIPTA with a shortfall that may lead to 90 layoffs and a 20% service cut before it goes to Gov. - ➤ Tax bills in Providence are delayed because the City Council has not approved new rates for the 2025-26 fiscal year and will hold a public hearing on June 30 at 5:30 p.m. before council votes on July 7 and July 14 send the proposal to Mayor Smiley for signature—this delay could postpone payments, including a $15 million pension fund installment, until a $38 million state payment arrives next month.
