CULTURE NEWS

  • Noah White, a Providence native, joined officials Monday at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket when they uncovered the time capsule his father buried during baseball’s longest game in 1981—its signed baseballs and mementos will be shown at City Hall before being moved to the new high school.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University professor Xinsheng Sean Ling was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award & will travel to the University of Buenos Aires to study phase transitions in type-II superconductors while working with Professor Gabriela Pasquini on the peak effect problem.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a kidney transplant specialist for Brown Medicine (34), was deported from the country in March after agents at Logan Airport found photos on her phone of Hezbollah figures—a move her lawyers say should have included a hearing. Federal government lawyers maintained that the expedited removal process under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 gave agents the authority to act without a court review.  The Providence Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island’s Department of Health launched the You Good, Man? campaign today to help working-age men check on each other's mental health — aiming to reduce high suicide and overdose rates among men. The initiative, funded by a $190,000 CDC grant, features a video with local talent and an online hub offering conversation tips and support services.  The Providence Journal
  • Union workers representing over 2,500 nurses and health care staff at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital voted Tuesday to authorize a strike but have not filed the required 10-day notice; they have been negotiating with Brown University Health since their contract expired on March 31 and said the final offer would raise health care costs and force overtime for some staff — a move that could hurt workers’ schedules.  The Public's Radio
