BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trinity Brewhouse will change hands in July when the owners of Patio on Broadway take over the popular venue known for its craft beer and chicken wings — preserving a 30-year legacy. The new owners plan to retain many longtime staff — updating the space while keeping its neighborhood spirit.  ABC 6
  • Providence Loco Hot Deals opened on Friday, June 27 as customers lined up overnight for discounts at a unique liquidation store that reduces prices daily—$10 on Fridays to $1 on Wednesdays. The store is at 395 Admiral Street and is open every day except Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but employees declined to provide more details.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A Providence man 47-year-old Kenji Ingram was charged with first-degree murder for shooting 42-year-old Larry Rose near 175 Broad St in Pawtucket on June 24 — he was held without bail after his arraignment on June 27.  The Providence Journal
  • Smithfield Police arrested 33-year-old Rafael Rivera, a Providence man, on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. when a traffic stop and K+9 unit search led officers to 38.5 kilograms of cocaine; he faces charges for intent to deliver drugs and possession of over 1 kilogram+ and is held without bail pending arraignment on Friday.  10 WJAR
  • A 16-year-old Cranston resident with a new provisional license was charged with felony driving to endanger resulting in death after he sped at 74 mph in a 25-mph zone on May 18 along Pippin Orchard Road—crossing into oncoming traffic and fatally injuring an 84-year-old Florida man in a head-on collision.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island became the fifth state to outlaw cat declawing when lawmakers approved a bill on June 18—Gov. McKee did not sign it but it takes effect on Sept. 1 and allows authorities to revoke or suspend licenses for violators.  ABC 6
  • Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the council mailed "Know Your Rights" flyers to every household to advise residents on what to do during ICE encounters in response to online backlash—these flyers were paid for with discretionary funds amid growing fears in the immigrant community.  ABC 6
  • John Savage, the retired co-founder of Brown’s Computer Science department, said passion fuels research and that major funding cuts are hurting U.S. science. Top experts warned that unless Congress boosts money for agencies like the NIH and NSF, our research will lose its lead — a loss that could hurt future discoveries.  Go Local Prov
