  • Medici Lounge hosted a Creatives for a Cause fundraiser in Providence with Hope for Providence to raise mental health awareness. The event featured musical and artistic performances, speakers, interactive art and a silent auction — organizers said guests should dress in a whimsical style for self-expression.  ABC 6

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Troopers arrested Licheva Castro for multiple charges including driving under the influence after a fiery accident on I-95 SB near Providence on June 21 that killed 49-year-old Santos Manuel Bonet of Cranston—Bonet is survived by his wife, a 31-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter.  10 WJAR

CRIME NEWS

  • A police review board cleared Sgt. Joseph Hanley to return to duty in August after a 45-day suspension for using body camera footage that showed him hitting a handcuffed suspect, while another officer was fired and arrested on Friday in Pawtucket for multiple drug charges—raising concerns about accountability in the police department.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brown University Chorus director Frederick Jodry ended his 33-year service with a farewell concert on June 16 that drew nearly 70 alumni and current members—he reflected on his international tours and the talent of Brown students during a Q&A and plans to continue performing at Trinity Church in Newport and leading the Schola Cantorum of Boston.  Brown University
  • Rhode Island has been a popular choice for famous couples, with Olivia Culpo and Christian McCaffrey, John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier, and others choosing venues like Watch Hill Chapel and St. Mary’s Church for their weddings. SPORTS NEWS

  • The New England Free Jacks won their third straight Major League Rugby Shield after defeating the Houston SaberCats 28—22 at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket with key plays from Brock Webster, Paula Balekana and Dan Hollinshead. Head coach Ryan Martin credited the strong local crowd—who appeared in force near the team’s Quincy home—for fueling the win, as the Free Jacks finished the season 14—0—5 while Houston ended with a 12—0—7 record.  ABC 6
  • Rhode Island FC coach Khano Smith was ejected after he got two yellow cards and a straight red for foul and abusive language at halftime—forcing his team to finish without him—and the club won by a score of 4 to 1 over Portland Hearts of Pine in the Jägermeister Cup group play. Smith will miss the next game against Hartford Athletic on July 26 as the team works to improve its position in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.  The Providence Journal
  • This week in sports, republished golf stories showcased Rhode Island’s top public courses and bucket list venues while local amateur Mike Calef clinched a close win at Rhode Island Country Club.
