- ➤ Providence fire officials said a house fire on Douglas Avenue Thursday morning displaced four people while no one was injured—investigation into the cause continues. 10 WJAR
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ East Providence police arrested 27-year-old Joey Marsden after he allegedly stomped on a Cape Verdean flag during a city hall flag raising ceremony and charged him with vandalism and disorderly conduct plus authorities are investigating if his actions will be considered a hate crime. ABC 6
- ➤ A 27-year-old man from Lincoln was arraigned in East Providence on Thursday for allegedly stomping on a Cape Verdean flag during a Cape Verdean independence celebration, and police found a knife and a Nazi flag on him—he was released on personal recognizance. ABC 6
- ➤ Burrillville police arrested 40-year-old Nicholas Smith after he pointed a handgun at officer Kathleen Kelley's face on Thursday morning at 1425 Tarklin Road—he appeared heavily intoxicated, faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, discharging a firearm within a compact area, simple assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, and will be arraigned in Providence District Court on Thursday—. 10 WJAR

- ➤ Rhode Island had been set to become a hub for offshore wind—developers spent $600 million on plans for nearly 150 turbines—but a new domestic policy bill in the House will cut federal subsidies and force projects to finish by 2027 to keep their tax credits. Lawmakers warn the change will likely lead to higher electricity prices and risk thousands of local jobs. Rhode Island PBS

- ➤ Smithfield School District unblocked a local critic from its social media accounts and agreed to pay $12,000 in legal fees as part of a settlement with the ACLU reached Tuesday - the agreement requires the district to stop blocking users and allow open access to posts. The Boston Globe

- ➤ Law enforcement leaders in Rhode Island urged drivers today to plan safe rides and stay sober this Fourth of July weekend — officials will deploy a Blood Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit in Bristol and Providence to catch impaired drivers. 10 WJAR
- ➤ Rhode Island lawmakers passed an assault weapons law that bans the sale—manufacturing and distribution of certain high-powered firearms, although it does not prohibit possession. Governor Dan McKee signed the law last month after more than 10 years of debate, and it will go into effect in 2026. The Boston Globe

- ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Health issued an advisory on Thursday about a recall by Kraft Heinz Food Company on over 350,000 pounds of fully cooked Oscar Mayer turkey bacon made from April 24 to June 11—alerts note potential Listeria contamination.
