BUSINESS NEWS

  • Travel + Leisure named T.F. Green International Airport the best in the United States after readers rated it 84.9 from surveys of check-in, design, and amenities. The airport remained the New England Patriots’ hub for another three years, and officials praised recent renovations that ease travel.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Alan Hassenfeld led Hasbro for decades and helped fund Hasbro Children's Hospital with corporate + personal money that aided children’s health initiatives. His work also spurred community projects like the Boundless Playground at Roger Williams Park + left a lasting mark on the toy industry.  The Providence Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • State police arrested eleven people in Providence and nearby towns after a 21 month investigation found a group of criminals involved in drive-by shootings, assault with intent to commit murder and drug trafficking, and officers seized five guns, six high capacity magazines, 738 grams of drugs and $42,000 in cash from incidents along I—95 near Providence Place mall, Moshassuck Industrial Highway and John Street.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ocean State Sessions launches its sixth season tomorrow on Rhode Island PBS and will also air on The Public’s Radio starting July 13 at 6:30 p.m.—the season features local acts playing a mix of alternative rock and cosmic cowboy tunes.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Governor Edward D. DiPrete died at 91 on July 9; he served as governor from 1985 to 1991 and was recognized for key education and infrastructure reforms — even as his later years were marred by controversy.  Go Local Prov
  • Former Gov. Edward DiPrete died and is remembered for his long career that brought him into contact with figures such as George H.W. Bush—he also cared for his wife during her battle with a rare neurological illness.  The Providence Journal
  • Edward D. DiPrete, the state's 70th governor, died at 91. He served from 1985 to 1991 and later was imprisoned for bribery and extortion charges—making him the only Rhode Island governor to serve prison time.  The Boston Globe
  • Striking Butler Hospital workers will demonstrate at Women and Infants on Wednesday+ they allege that Care New England has escalated intimidation by threatening layoffs when the strike began. The workers plan to join lawmakers who support their cause.  10 WJAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island colleges must stock Narcan in dorms starting Sept. 1 and train resident assistants to reverse opioid overdoses. Gov. Dan McKee signed the law on June 26—officials say the measure will help lower overdose deaths among young people.  Rhode Island PBS
