COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Christopher Sherman, a long-time volunteer firefighter with the Richmond Carolina Fire District, is battling lymphoblastic lymphoma and is receiving daily treatment at Rhode Island Hospital while community and first responder families rally around him. Supporters have organized frequent visits, a parade outside his hospital window, and plan a bike run and softball tournament—efforts that also include selling t-shirts and challenge coins to help with his medical costs.  10 WJAR

  • Rhode Island businessman Alan Hassenfeld died at 76. He led Hasbro as CEO for 15 years + donated to local causes including Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.  Rhode Island PBS

CRIME NEWS

  • Providence attorneys filed an appeal to block Sergeant Joseph Hanley from returning to duty in September after a panel ended his 45-day suspension for beating a handcuffed man in April 2020+ they claim evidence used in his hearing was improperly admitted.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • Film production for M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Remain moved to the Cranston Street Armory on July 1 where a soundstage was built and a food truck was set up—crew members continue to shoot both indoor and outdoor scenes with plans to film at Bristol Town Common later in July—local residents may catch a glimpse of the busy set. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and uses the armory as a controlled location away from adverse weather.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ordered CVS Health’s Omnicare unit to pay $948.8 million in penalties for submitting over 3.3 million allegedly false claims from 2010 to 2018 under the False Claims Act—CVS said it planned to appeal the ruling, noting that no patient was harmed.  The Boston Globe
  • Providence officials urged residents today to prepare for an above-average hurricane season by assembling emergency kits and signing up for CodeRed and PVD311 alerts as renovations to the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier were completed—families were advised to clear drains, visit cooling centers during heat waves, and avoid floodwaters to reduce risks.  The Providence Journal
  • URI and the Department of Environmental Management have partnered to restore the 2,300-acre W. Alton Jones Campus, which closed in 2020 due to financial struggles, with limited public access scheduled for fall and more activation planned in spring and summer. DEM will handle maintenance, relocate up to 35 staff and run environmental education programs — ensuring Rhode Islanders eventually enjoy hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities at this historic site.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley will announce the city’s preparation plan for hurricane season and severe weather today at 10:45 a.m. at the Providence Emergency Management Agency—he and PEMA Director Clara Decerbo will detail measures to address up to 19 predicted storms and boost infrastructure resilience.  ABC 6
