COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Patrick Fealey, a Rhode Island writer whose November Esquire essay about his 13-month homelessness led to 3,300 donations totaling nearly $200,000, now lives in a rented townhouse in southern Rhode Island with his partner and feels safe after years of hardship. He said his ongoing health problems from Lyme disease and reliance on Medicaid underline wider housing and healthcare challenges while a local playwright is writing a play inspired by his journey—aiming to spark change.  The Boston Globe

CRIME NEWS

  • Providence Mayor Brett Smiley’s administration filed an appeal in Superior Court to let the city fire Sgt. Joseph Hanley, who pleaded guilty in 2020 after being filmed kicking and punching a handcuffed man — he is still suspended for 45 days while the case is reviewed.  Rhode Island PBS
  • Lincoln police said Friday they arrested two suspects after stopping a speeding car on Route 146 in Limerock and seized drugs, a 9 mm pistol and cash; Evan Tucker (30, of Providence) and Sabrina Biscoglio (31, of Port St. Lucie) face multiple charges including possession with intent to deliver and firearm violations.  10 WJAR
  • Providence police are investigating an incident on Stanwood Street where a man allegedly tased a woman at around 1:30 on Thursday and attempted to force her into his vehicle—she escaped and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The family-owned Hazel Origin Coffee opened a new location at Chen Family Hall on Brook Street at Brown — offering premium coffee, locally sourced food and a cozy spot for Brown students and Providence neighbors. The café serves from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will extend its hours to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7.  Brown University

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Health & the Department of Environmental Management advised visitors to avoid contact with Edgewood Lake, Cunliff Lake, and Elm Lake at Roger Williams Park because a blue-green algae bloom can cause skin irritation and illness; people and pets exposed should wash with clean water immediately.  ABC 6
  • Butler Hospital's six-week strike has cut behavioral health care for vulnerable patients as union workers protest wages+benefits and working conditions. Care New England CEO Michael Wagner urged the striking workers to return to work so that patient care can resume and talks continue.  The Boston Globe

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Providence Journal announced its 2025 All-State Girls Lacrosse teams at the All-State Awards show on June 18 at the Providence Performing Arts Center+ selections were made by sports staff in collaboration with coach associations. Top players from local schools are honored, including Julianna Casey from Lincoln School who scored 90 goals and Grace MacLean from Moses Brown who led with 58 goals.  The Providence Journal
  • Providence Journal announced the 2025 All-State Boys Lacrosse first and second teams, naming top players at the All-State Awards show held on June 18 at the Providence Performing Arts Center. Coaches and associations helped select athletes from local high schools such as La Salle, Barrington, and Moses Brown—many of whom have committed to play in college next season.  The Providence Journal
