CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Tiverton police said a Massachusetts woman allegedly left her 15-month-old baby and small dog in a white Toyota parked at Bally’s Casino while she played slot machines for over 30 minutes on Saturday at 7 a.m.—the baby was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for evaluation before being released to a family member and the woman faces a cruelty to or neglect charge. 10 WJAR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A report from Environment America found that nearly 60% of Rhode Island’s 66 beaches were unsafe for swimming in 2024 because of fecal contamination, and officials said aging sewer systems and stormwater runoff contributed to the problem — urging federal and state funding for upgrades. Local health authorities have closed some beaches temporarily after high bacteria readings were detected. Rhode Island PBS

- ➤ Providence Police chief Col. Oscar L. Perez Jr. will hold a press conference this afternoon to answer questions about police involvement in two incidents—an ICE detention on July 13 at Silver Lake that drew criticism from state Rep. David Morales and an arrest on West Friendship Street on July 5 during which officers admitted striking a man. The Providence Journal
- ➤ The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority announced that the Mount Hope Bridge between Bristol and Portsmouth will close from 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 until 5 a.m. on Aug. 18 for a repaving project—emergency vehicles cannot cross and detours have been arranged while work is set to be rescheduled to September if weather interferes. - ➤ Providence police chief Colonel Oscar Perez held a press conference Monday afternoon at the Public Safety Complex to address a Sunday ICE raid at 55 Alverson Avenue and an earlier incident on West Friendship Street. Officials clarified that police did not assist in any arrests and only documented multiple vehicle accidents during the events—remarks that followed a statement by Representative David Morales regarding a breach in protocol. - ➤ After officers were filmed near an ICE arrest following a multi-vehicle crash at 55 Alverson Avenue on Sunday, Police Chief Col.
