COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providence Parks Department and One Neighborhood Builders opened sustainable public restrooms in Merino Park on July 17 after residents voted to add these amenities through participatory budgeting. The bathrooms use urine-diverting dry toilets that send urine to be turned into fertilizer by Wasted* PBC and have increased staffing at local parks while plans for additional installations are under review.  The Providence Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence will host a free RWP Pops Concert at the Temple to Music in Roger Williams Park on August 6 featuring the Rhode Island Philharmonic—organizers have set a rain date for August 7 and will kick off the event with a morning gathering on Wednesday.  10 WJAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • San Miguel School of Providence, a Lasallian middle school for boys from diverse backgrounds, offers a holistic program that supports academic, social and emotional growth while preparing students for top local high schools—its over 400 graduates show its success despite the challenge of raising $2 million annually for tuition and resources. The school welcomes daily visitors, mentor volunteers and donor support, and it will launch an Integrated Life Skills course next year.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island will receive no federal funding to restore beach sand after storms, forcing state and local taxpayers to cover all costs—officials confirmed. Past projects like Hurricane Sandy used mixed funds, but rising erosion and sea-level rise now threaten to drive future expenses even higher—local leaders warned.  Go Local Prov
  • David Welch, a South Kingstown beachfront homeowner, filed a lawsuit on June 27 in Washington County Superior Court against the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, arguing that the permit conditions to repair his storm-damaged home force him to record a public beach and allow ongoing inspections—requirements he says violate his property rights and constitutional protections. Represented by the Pacific Legal Foundation, Welch claims that without a new permit he could face substantial fines and an uncompensated taking of his property.  The Boston Globe

  • Tania and Talia Santos, twins who were once preemies at Women & Infants Hospital’s NICU, now work there as nurses caring for tiny fighters — they are in a 16-week orientation and will soon cover overnight shifts, continuing the hospital's long legacy of advanced care.  The Providence Journal

  • Rhode Island officials are urging local business and political leaders to unite behind a bid to bring the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun to Providence — Gov. McKee toured The AMP with a potential buyer and plans to build an AAU sports facility that could double as a professional team training center.  The Boston Globe
