CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Providence police stated that the only homicide recorded in the first six months of 2025 was ruled justifiable after a Jan 20 altercation—records show that violent crimes, including gun-related assaults, rapes, and property crimes, have declined compared to recent years. The Providence Journal
- ➤ On June 8, Pawtucket police shot 28-year-old Sebastian Yidana in the shoulder after he was reported to be pointing a rifle that turned out to be a plastic replica—he faced a felony charge—and was arraigned at 9 a.m. that morning as Officer Thomas Letourneau remained on leave while the attorney general’s office investigated his use of force. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brown University hosted its summer Pre-College Programs in 2024 so high schoolers from around the world, including nearly 170 local students, could learn in hands-on labs and design workshops. - ➤ RIPTA's board will vote on proposals to cut 16 bus routes, reduce service on 30 routes, raise fares, and consider layoffs to close a $10 million funding gap at a special meeting on Aug 7 — if passed, these changes will begin on Sept 13.
