- ➤ Higher Ground International opened its new headquarters at 7 Ninigret Ave. Monday at 10 a.m.+ Governor Dan McKee and Mayor Brett Smiley attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony as the nonprofit moved from the former St. Joseph’s Hospital facility, where it had operated for the past two years to serve West African immigrants, refugees, and other communities. - ➤ More than two dozen Rhode Island business owners announced a joint effort this month to create 'immigrant defense zones' that bar federal immigration agents from entering private business areas without a warrant — a plan focused mainly in Providence. - ➤ Alyssa Fournier, a recent graduate, launched Slangin’ Spots to connect small makers with retail brands so they can compete with online giants using a subscription model. - ➤ Providence’s only gondola company, La Gondola, was started in 1997 by Cynthia and Allen Days after unexpected events in Providence led them away from Florida plans—former Mayor Buddy Cianci helped secure the dock that launched the service. Owner Matthew "Marcello" Haynes joined as a gondolier in 1999 and expanded the fleet to four boats with nearly 20 gondoliers, and the team now offers seasonal rides for locals and visitors.
