COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brown University junior Ben Underwood is working with Farm Fresh Rhode Island this summer to bring hands-on learning about seasonal produce to farmers markets and libraries in Providence—he leads scavenger hunts, taste tests, and cooking demos for children, seniors, and families. His internship deepens his interest in environmental and educational law while connecting the community with local agriculture.  Brown University

  • The Theatre By The Sea at 364 Cards Pond Road in Wakefield is staging Hairspray—its lavish production features a high-energy cast under director Christopher Campbell and runs through Aug. 16 with tickets priced from $74 to $100.  The Boston Globe
  • A new book by J. Randy Taraborrelli shows that President Kennedy felt really hurt when Governor Chafee handed him a small silver bowl in September 1963 during a Newport celebration—he passed it to his mother-in-law after calling the gift thoughtless.  The Boston Globe
  • Reader's Digest named stuffies as Rhode Island's top comfort food in its America the Tasty 2025 list—this baked dish of stuffed quahog clams, mixed with smoked Portuguese sausage and seasoned bread crumbs, is celebrated for its ability to bring families together.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown University will launch a new $20m institute to study safe AI systems for mental health care, funded by the National Science Foundation and aligned with the White House AI Action Plan. Professor Ellie Pavlick will lead a collaboration of experts from computer science, law, and education—an effort that will include developing a K-12 AI curriculum and assessing AI risks.  The Boston Globe
  • Providence Public School Board announced 16 community listening sessions—held over July and August—to get residents' ideas on what the city's schools should do once control is returned; the next session is on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Hope High School.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transit riders and advocates at a hearing on July 28 warned that RIPTA plans to cut or reduce 58 routes because of a $10 million shortfall will harm jobs and access to essential services—state leaders are waiting on an efficiency study report before deciding on extra funding and the proposed cuts could take effect on Sept.13.  Rhode Island PBS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown Health announced Tuesday that Newport Hospital’s Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center, Gateway Healthcare and Samuels Sinclair Dental Center will remain open for the next fiscal year after community and city council opposition to the proposed closures. The health system was considering closing the facilities to cut costs+ will assess the birthing center’s future over the next year.  The Providence Journal
