CRIME NEWS

  • At 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, thieves tried to steal a jet ski and trailer from a Kingston homeowner, sparking a 47-mile chase that ended in a fiery crash in New Bedford—Livan Sarit, 21, of Providence, was arrested while two other suspects remain at large.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence-based musician and scholar Jake Blount explained that his style of folk music evolves as he reinterprets traditional tunes—such as the sea shanty 'Haul Away Joe'—to keep the music vibrant and connected to its roots. He said his work on live performances and studies at Brown deepened his creative approach, an effort recently featured on Rhode Island PBS.  The Public's Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority released an efficiency study today that shows a nearly $18 million gap and proposes fare hikes and service cuts. RIPTA will hold a public hearing Monday in Providence — CEO Christopher Durand will answer questions—.  The Public's Radio
  • State Representative David Morales and Pawtucket officials urged Governor McKee to use a $15 million surplus to cover RIPTA’s deficit as the transit agency holds public meetings about what to cut. Lawmakers warned that without the surplus—if funds are not provided—service reductions will hurt working-class communities.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at Brown University used a custom-built tool to detect a brain signal pattern that predicted which patients with mild cognitive impairment would later develop Alzheimer’s disease. They will use the new marker in future studies to understand the signal’s origins and test treatments— an effort that may lead to earlier diagnosis.  Brown University
  • Robert Marshall, a Rhode Island social worker, voluntarily surrendered his license after the state said he broke rules by having a non-professional relationship with a client from 2013 to 2022 — he will not try to renew his license and the case will be reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank.  Go Local Prov
