ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Jamestown police rescued four swimmers on Aug. 1 when a canoe overturned near Taylor Point—an officer and bystanders used life rings to help them, and all were checked without needing hospital care. ABC 6
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 1, Woonsocket police arrested 49-year-old Alexandro Cortes Teron on Court Street after a reported fight left his 46-year-old brother unresponsive and later dead—he was charged with first degree domestic murder—and officers said the suspect punched him, causing a fatal fall on the pavement. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On August 1, the fourth Miya D. Brophy-Baermann Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Abby + Ella. Abby is studying Communication at Rhode Island College while Ella is studying Communicative Disorders at the University of Rhode Island + the award honors Miya, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Providence in 2021 and for whom both accused were found guilty. - ➤ Michael Pimentel works as a strength and conditioning coach at Brown and leads door-to-door fitness sessions through his new Build a Better Bear program to help students and staff move better and stay strong+ he draws on his experience as an open-water swimmer and clean waterways advocate, growing up in East Providence and now living in Narragansett. - ➤ Rhode Island GOP leaders called for Rep. Enrique Sanchez to be censured after he posted that federal agents are Nazi ICE thugs—he also said he would soon confront them in person. House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi gave no comment since the legislature is not in session. The Providence Journal

- ➤ Last week, Burrillville Little League won the state championship at Peck Park on July 26, and Providence College held its first men’s basketball practice on July 29 while Brown and URI will play their rivalry game on Oct. 3 at Centreville Bank Stadium—meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox made trades on July 31 and 88-year-old Ray Carroll won gold at both the FIMBA World Maxibasketball Championship and National Senior Games.
