COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Providence women, Cassie Souvannaxa and Tina Phommachan, are coping with hardship after their husbands were deported to Laos on May 25 and are now in Laos visiting them while juggling full-time jobs and family needs. They support each other and turn to a local immigrant assistance group+ which helps families navigate legal hurdles and the challenges of separation.  Rhode Island PBS

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 8, Pawtucket police officer Letourneau shot Sebastian Yidana after a call about a man with a toy gun and the ACLU of Rhode Island sent a letter asking why his body camera did not record the moments before the shooting—raising questions over the missing video and lack of a required report as the investigation continues.  The Boston Globe
  • A Providence woman was arrested on Aug. 1 for alleged DUI—police said 43-year-old Ameena Gatlin registered BAC levels of .245 and .240 after they responded to a crash at West Main Road and Union Street, and she was charged accordingly.  ABC 6
  • Pawtucket Police said a 60-year-old man—identified as Robert Smith—is held without bail after he allegedly robbed a Gulf Express on Aug. 3 by threatening a clerk with a gun and fleeing with cash.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Providence Superior Court hears the Washington Bridge lawsuit filed last year against 13 companies for design, construction and inspection services on the bridge. The court will consider four motions and requests for documents, including communications with RIDOT and inspection reports — with the hearing scheduled for 10 a.m.  ABC 6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Butler Hospital workers have been striking since May 27 for higher wages and better conditions and union members updated their picket line status on Tuesday — the strike has now lasted 12 weeks as workers focus on improved safety and pay. Butler Hospital closed 40 beds — a change that has led to longer wait lists while workers continue to protest.  10 WJAR
  • Attorney General Peter Neronha and the Rhode Island Foundation have opened applications for dental care grants for Providence children—$10 million is set aside with awards from $250,000 to $3,000,000 for projects lasting up to three years. The effort comes as half of third graders have experienced tooth decay, showing a need to improve care.  10 WJAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rhode Island FC has scored only 14 goals this season and fell in a 2—0 loss on Aug. 2 after striker JJ Williams was red-carded for violent conduct, making him unavailable for today's match against Detroit City FC at Centreville Bank Stadium. The team sits 10th in the Eastern Conference with 17 points and must boost its offense to keep playoff hopes alive while drawing a strong crowd of 8,483 at home.  The Providence Journal
