COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A peace and remembrance ceremony was held in Jamestown on August 9 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic blast, where local leaders and keynote speaker John O. Pastore urged the use of diplomacy to disarm nuclear weapons worldwide—an appeal that comes as Rhode Island prepares to celebrate VJ Day on Monday.  10 WJAR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist in Providence crashed on Silver Spring Street when a car hit his bike as he turned into Walmart at 10 p.m. on Aug. 8—both drivers received summonses while the rider suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  ABC 6

CRIME NEWS

  • Providence police are investigating a stabbing on August 8 at Cranston Street—officers arrived at 6:30 p.m. to find a male victim taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  ABC 6
  • Providence police investigated two separate stabbings that occurred last Friday—one on Cranston Street where a man in his 50s sustained an arm laceration and one on Barstow Street where a 19-year-old male was injured and taken to the hospital, and a suspect carrying a knife was taken into custody at that scene.  Go Local Prov

  • Air Force veteran Tom Jessop spoke with Mark Patinkin on a Providence bike path—discussing his military service in the 1970s and his philosophy on facing physical challenges today.  The Providence Journal

  • A federal judge in Texas vacated the CFPB Medical Debt Rule that would have removed about $49 billion in medical debt from credit reports for roughly 15 million people. The ruling also nullified similar state rules, including in Rhode Island—raising concerns among consumer advocates.  10 WJAR
