CRIME NEWS

  • Providence police are looking for a man who robbed the Supreme Gas Station on River Ave Monday morning — he threatened staff with a knife before taking the cash register and fleeing, leaving the weapon behind.  ABC 6
  • A motorcycle and car collided near the intersection of Elmwood Ave. — Congress Ave. in Providence at 10:03, killing the motorcycle driver and leaving its passenger with life-threatening injuries while police investigate the crash.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • The John Carter Brown Library in Providence is showcasing 'Elemental: Crafting Books from Nature,' an exhibition that reveals how natural materials and generations of workers shaped early printed books. The exhibit runs until Dec. 15 and features 35 rare volumes that show the history and art of bookmaking — a must-see for lovers of tangible manuscripts.  Brown University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • URI researchers are refining real-time weather tools — RI-CHAMP, STORMTOOLS, and MyCoast — that help map storm impacts and inform local decision-makers, while parts of these tools are already public. They are also planning to assess a sustainable funding model as hurricane season nears, with proposals seeking roughly $1 million a year to keep the systems updated.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Food and Drug Administration recalled 803 cases of Target's Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies sold in Rhode Island and Massachusetts because they might contain wood—indicating possible foreign material contamination. The recalled cookies were packaged in cases of 10 with varying expiration dates.  ABC 6

  • Jeremiah Thomas MacKay, a former Rhode Islander now in Florida, orders hot wieners from his hometown regularly after his girlfriend first surprised him with an anniversary delivery. SPORTS NEWS

  • URI men's basketball team announced its 13-game non-conference schedule that includes seven home games, a three-game tournament in Orlando, and a neutral site contest against Tulsa, with the season set to begin on Nov. 3 against Stetson. The slate also features key matchups with in-state teams like Providence and Brown along with contests versus Yale and UAlbany (details that build on last season’s 18 wins).  ABC 6
