CRIME NEWS

  • Former Rhode Island fugitive Nicholas Alahverdian was found guilty of rape in Utah for an assault in 2008—he will be sentenced on October 20th and faces 5 years to life in prison.  10 WJAR
  • Police responded shortly after noon Wednesday to an altercation at 457 Benefit Street in Fox Point—where a suspect with a box cutter slashed two people before fleeing onto Wickenden Street.  Go Local Prov
  • A Rhode Island man, Nicholas Rossi, who once faked his death to avoid rape charges, was found guilty of raping his ex-girlfriend in a 2008 trial in Salt Lake County—he will be sentenced on October 20 and faces another trial in September.  The Boston Globe
  • Ramsundar Ramkalawan, an Exeter man, was convicted in June 2022 of killing his 65-year-old roommate Donna MacDonald with a rock and is now serving a life sentence with no chance of parole—video evidence showed he discarded key evidence after the attack.  ABC 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • After a legal battle ended Jeshuat Israel’s 140-year occupancy of Touro Synagogue, the annual George Washington Letter Reading moved to Old Colony House on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m.—where it will honor religious freedom with readings of letters by Washington and Moses Seixas and a keynote by Crystal Williams.  The Providence Journal
  • A new J.J. Abrams movie titled Ghostwriter will film next Monday in Providence with scenes shot on Benefit Street — city officials announced that Thomas and Angell streets will be closed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Point Street Bridge will be closed from 8 a.m. on Aug. 24 to 9 a.m. on Aug. 25 for safety.  10 WJAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Senator-elect Stefano Famiglietti will be sworn in at 4 p.m. in the senate chambers as the fourth district's newest senator, replacing late senate president Dominick Ruggerio who died after a battle with cancer on April 21—he won the August 5 runoff election.  ABC 6
  • Local farmers lost nearly $3 million in federal funds that helped schools and food banks buy local food, and a new bipartisan bill now aims to create a permanent grant program to support them—Senator Reed and Senator Justice back the effort.  The Boston Globe

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Rhode Island doctor was fined and sanctioned after performing laser eye surgery on a patient's wrong eye—RIDOH documents show he signed a consent order on Wednesday that requires a $1,100 fee and a pre-approved training course within six months.  Go Local Prov
