BUSINESS NEWS

  • Michael K. Crossen, legal counsel for High Rock Development, will replace the late owner David Sweetser—continuing redevelopment of Providence’s Superman building. The project received a $41 million pledge from state and city leaders—awaiting a low-interest loan up to $236 million as costs rise from $220 million to $308 million.  The Boston Globe

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thomas Dambo is building three new trolls in North Kingstown, East Providence, and Arcadia State Park using reclaimed materials to raise waste awareness. His team started work in North Kingstown and Arcadia while construction in East Providence is underway—these sculptures will be finished by August 24 to invite local exploration.  Rhode Island PBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A 17-member legislative panel is examining why only 43% of foster kids graduated high school in 2024—this rate is lower than that of students facing homelessness. The group, led by Rep. Julie Casimiro and including educators and advocates, will deliver a final report by July 1 and meet again on Sept. 15.  Rhode Island PBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • US Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter on August 13 demanding that Rhode Island end its sanctuary policies that hinder federal immigration enforcement—Governor McKee must respond by Tuesday. Local officials dismissed the letter as bullying—Rhode Island said it regularly cooperates with federal law enforcement.  The Boston Globe
