  • On Tuesday, Judge Mitchell Goldberg ruled that Woonsocket-based CVS must pay over $1.2B in two whistleblower cases alleging fraudulent overbilling—one ruling tripled a previous damages order to $285M with an added $4.87M civil fine while a July decision ordered CVS' Omnicare unit to pay nearly $950M.  Go Local Prov

CRIME NEWS

  • Barrington police are asking the public for help finding 17-year-old Cian Fearon, who was last seen wearing a maroon shirt and pink hooded sweatshirt at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coral Care is a new online tool that helps parents get in-home support for children with developmental delays—by connecting them with speech, occupational, and physical therapists. Founder Jennifer Wirt said the service now helps over a thousand Southern New England families prepare for school.  10 WJAR
  • Girls on the Run Rhode Island helps girls gain life skills through running and interactive lessons for third through eighth grade; the program served over 1,000 participants last school year and will expand services to Bristol County, Massachusetts+ it is also seeking more volunteer coaches to support its teams.  The Providence Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NBC 10’s Gene Valicenti remembered Judge Frank Caprio—who had a long legal career and later became known from 'Caught in Providence'—on Thursday after the judge passed away this week.  10 WJAR
  • RIPEC, a business-backed fiscal watchdog group, said state spending in Rhode Island grew too fast by 10.9% over the past two years while revenue only rose 6.4%, pushing the record $14.3 billion budget higher with tax and fee hikes funding schools and health care—raising concerns about unsustainable costs. Lawmakers said their balanced budgets support vital services even as RIPEC urged a slowdown in growth and a closer look at spending effectiveness.  Rhode Island PBS

  • The RIIL girls volleyball season is starting this fall—ten top returning players are set to lead their high school teams. The preview names stars from schools like Westerly, Chariho, La Salle, East Greenwich, North Kingstown, Barrington, and Mt.
