CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Providence Police responded to a shooting on Public Street Sunday night (6:30 p.m.) where a 17-year-old male was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening and detectives continued their investigation with no arrests made. Go Local Prov
- ➤ Providence Police arrested Lucy Carr on Friday, August 22 at about 7:00 p.m. for tagging the historic Shepard Building on Westminster Street; her boyfriend was also arrested for obstructing officers—she had an active bench warrant. Go Local Prov
- ➤ On Friday, the SEC expanded its enforcement action by linking former Marine Christopher Aubin and his ex-girlfriend Ashley Corcoran to an alleged Ponzi scheme after adding Rhode Island businessman Russell Miller, Jr.—whose firm financed a property on Chalkstone Avenue now listed for $465,000—to the case. - ➤ The police closed Point Street Bridge in Providence at about 8 a.m. on Aug. 24 for filming of J.J. Abrams’ movie Ghostwriter, which stars Glen Powell along with Samuel L. Jackson, Jenna Ortega and Emma Mackey. The crew spent 12 hours installing lighting while filming will wrap after dawn Monday — ending the week-long shoot. The Providence Journal
- ➤ A statue honoring descendants of the transatlantic slave trade was unveiled at Independence Park in Bristol on Sunday afternoon—town and state officials including Senator Jack Reed and Representative Gabe Amo gathered to mark the nation's painful past and promote hope. - ➤ Rhode Island public school districts have released start dates for the 2025-26 school year. Most districts— including Providence Public Schools, Barrington, and others begin on Aug. 27 while districts like Bristol-Warren and Newport start in early September with some kindergarten classes scheduled as late as Sept. 8.
