CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A pregnant mother and her 6-year-old son are recovering from severe head injuries after an alleged hammer attack outside a Cranston apartment around 12:23 p.m. Saturday, and police arrested Rashad Talley—neighbors report he had mental health struggles and weapons in his apartment. 10 WJAR
- ➤ In 2023, GoLocal published videos of a Newport wedding melee that led to six charges with five cases disposed and one still pending—no one received prison time and the next court hearing is set for September 11. Go Local Prov
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Dan McKee announced a new plan to address RIPTA's $10 million gap by reducing bus frequency on 46 routes + raising fares and increasing ads to avoid full route eliminations. The proposal goes to the RIPTA board on Thursday and will take effect on September 27 if approved. The Public's Radio
- ➤ Judge Frank Caprio passed away on August 20 after battling pancreatic cancer. His family announced a public visitation on August 28 from 3:00 to 7:00 at the Rhode Island Convention Center—located on One Sabin Street—and a requiem mass on August 29 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, with burial being private. - ➤ URI professor Reza Abiri got a $546,848 federal grant to build AI-based robots that help people with spinal cord injuries move more independently—he will work with medical schools, rehab centers, and industry partners and launch a new class and hack-a-thon for students.
