- ➤ Volunteers with the Old Colony and Newport Railway restored the historic Newport Secondary track and connected it to Aquidneck island’s rail network this year—hosting a successful public excursion in July that raised funds and showcased the line’s potential. The group will host another excursion on Sept. 14 and is working with state planners to explore alternative travel options for the region. The Providence Journal

- ➤ Goodwill opened its first Rhode Island by-the-pound outlet store in Providence at 9 a.m. today—selling clothing for $1.89 a pound at 100 Houghton St. in the Wanskuck neighborhood while using a space that was once an alternative school. The Providence Journal
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A pregnant mother and her 6-year-old son were attacked with a hammer while leaving their Cranston home for a birthday celebration Saturday at 12:23 p.m.—the suspect, Rashad Talley, admitted to the assault and was charged with felony assault and battery, leaving the mother with minor injuries, the child with a fractured skull, and the unborn baby unharmed. - ➤ Federal agents seized nearly six pounds of meth hidden under a car hood in Providence during a months-long investigation—arresting brothers Americo and Fausto Ureña-Jimenez who drove a silver Acura SUV on Detroit Avenue to deliver the drugs. 10 WJAR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marzulla Law LLC—a firm with conservative ties—has demanded that Brown University retract research by its Climate and Development Lab linking anti-wind group Green Oceans to a fossil-fuel funded disinformation network. Brown said it will uphold academic freedom as debate over offshore wind projects and research funding continues. The Boston Globe
- ➤ NBC 10 toured Central Falls’ new state-of-the-art high school on Higginson Avenue that will replace the nearly 100-year-old building on Summer Street—Central Falls leaders and architects shared plans for special classrooms like a law and community advocacy room with a mock courtroom setup and secure entries. The building will also feature a rooftop terrace, sports fields, and a 400-seat auditorium, with completion expected in December. 10 WJAR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island’s governor Dan McKee proposed reducing bus frequency on 46 of RIPTA’s 58 routes—raising fares and adding advertising—to close a $10 million gap in the budget. If approved, the service cuts will take effect on September 27 and help avoid eliminating full bus routes. Rhode Island PBS
- ➤ Tuesday, Providence leaders announced that two new rescue trucks will replace Rescue 3 at the Branch Avenue Station and Rescue 4 at the Washington Street Station. The fire department said the trucks, partly funded by the FY21 Assistance to Firefighters Grant—both units answered 12,179 calls in 2024—will help firefighters respond faster to emergencies. 10 WJAR
