BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Amtrak’s new Acela express train stopped in Providence Wednesday to preview a high speed rail service launching today — the upgraded trains offer free Wi-Fi, more power outlets, and 27% more capacity per trip. Amtrak will add 28 new trains by 2027 to shorten the trip to Washington D.C. ABC 6
- ➤ Goodwill opened its first Rhode Island outlet store at 100 Houghton St. in Providence’s Wanskuck neighborhood on Aug.27 — clothing is sold by the pound for $1.89. Local influencers visited on Aug.26 and the store now occupies a building that once served as an alternative school. The Providence Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today, a new mural was unveiled outside the AS220 building at the corner of Snow and Washington streets in downtown Providence as local artist Shey Rí Acu Ríos used community input to design the piece featuring cherished objects that connect residents. The mural leads into PVDFest, a city-sponsored art and music festival scheduled for Sept. 5 and 6. The Providence Journal
- ➤ Rhode Island theaters will begin their fall season soon with six shows that mix dark comedy, drama and musical horror using many discount ticket options. Shows will run from early September to mid-November in venues in Providence, Pawtucket and Warwick—audiences can enjoy affordable local art. The Providence Journal
- ➤ WaterFire Providence is a nonprofit arts group that creates large public art installations in Providence and has spotlighted the city for nearly three decades. The group works with donations, grants, and sponsors & recently teamed with Red Bull to feature a wakeboarder in a river performance. The Providence Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Johnson & Wales University received a nearly $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships of up to $15,000 a year for biology majors and cover tuition and professional development. The five-year award (which offers mentorship and career training) is expected to boost Rhode Island’s biotech talent pipeline. Rhode Island PBS
- ➤ Students in 22 districts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts start school today — with new and interim superintendents in Pawtucket, Barrington, East Greenwich, Johnston and Providence — as communities welcome a new academic year. ABC 6
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Congressman Seth Magaziner will introduce the Don’t STEAL bill this afternoon at his Warwick office—aimed at reclassifying wage theft as a felony instead of a misdemeanor; the bill targets an estimated $50 billion taken from workers annually. ABC 6

- ➤ The Providence Journal sports team is inviting readers to vote for preseason MVPs in fall high school sports with polls open until Sept. 1—voters can choose for boys soccer, girls soccer, field hockey, girls tennis and girls volleyball, and a football poll will start next week.
