BUSINESS NEWS

  • Brown University will lease 30,000 square feet of lab space at no cost valued at $13 million over 10 years to support Ocean State Labs—Rhode Island’s first life science incubator set to open by the end of 2025 in Providence’s Jewelry District. The incubator will house up to 30 biotechnology and medical startups through a partnership with the Rhode Island Life Science Hub and Ancora L&G.  Brown University

CRIME NEWS

  • A Providence man pleaded guilty on Thursday to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl—over 1,500 fentanyl-laced pills and more than 400 grams of fentanyl powder were found during a court-authorized search of his home—and he will be sentenced on December 2.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lemonade Stand festival in Providence started as a small outdoor art fair last summer and will be expanded this year to include live local music & interactive murals that let families and artists create together. Organizers say the event will offer a welcoming space for creative expression and community connection.  Rhode Island PBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Providence returned to class today as redesigned schools like Harry Kizirian and Frank D. Spaziano now serve over 1,000 pupils with dual language classes and expanded pre-K seats—many are in temporary spaces while waiting for full renovations.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pawtucket city re-hired Joseph Morais, a senior project leader fired in May 2024 for a Facebook post on a 1956 Woonsocket photo that was called 'ignorant and racist.' An arbitrator ruled in his favor after he appealed his firing—Morais gave a written apology and faces a written warning for any future violations.  The Boston Globe
  • Rhode Islanders paid tribute to the late Judge Frank Caprio, who died last week at 88, at a public remembrance held at the RI Convention Center on Aug 28 to honor his long service—community members and officials gathered to remember his work.  The Providence Journal
