COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Megan Gardner, Sam Greenwood and Nicole Modi from the Providence Parks Department explained the unique playground features at the newly remodeled parks—highlighting design choices made for local families.  The Providence Journal
  • St. James Episcopal Church in North Providence will install a self-service Narcan Life box on its driveway at 474 Fruit Hill Ave today—stocked with 20 boxes of nasal spray to help during opioid emergencies—and will bless the box at 6 p.m.  10 WJAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The International Museum of World War II in Wakefield is ranked among the top 10 World War II museums worldwide by National Geographic for its extensive collection that includes items such as Hitler’s shovel and a paratrooper dummy from D-Day. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, charges $10 for adults, and offers free entry for veterans and children 12 and under.  The Providence Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State data from Tuesday showed that chronic absenteeism in Rhode Island schools fell to 22.1% in the 2024-2025 school year from 24.7% last year, resulting in about 142,360 fewer absences and marking a three-year improvement since the COVID peak. The Rhode Island Department of Education credited the drop to coordinated efforts by families, educators and initiatives such as refrigerator calendars+an attendance heat map to boost student presence.  Rhode Island PBS
  • With local schools beginning the 2025 to 2026 school year, Dr. Subodha Kumar of Temple University spoke on the benefits & dangers of using AI in the classroom.  ABC 6
  • Brown hosted its 262nd Opening Convocation on Sept 2 when more than 3,200 students gathered on College Green. Leaders like President Paxson and Dean Pollock urged the new students to take risks and learn new ideas—helping them grow on their academic journey.  Brown University

HEALTH NEWS

  • On September 3rd, the Rhode Island Department of Health reported that nitazenes—drugs up to 800 times as potent as morphine and often mixed with fentanyl—were detected in the state drug supply, and it sent an advisory urging clinicians to educate patients on harm reduction. No nitazene-related deaths were reported in Rhode Island.  Go Local Prov
