CRIME NEWS

  • A 58 year old Massachusetts man working as a bus monitor for Ocean State Transit in Barrington was indicted on charges including second degree child molestation, indecent solicitation, simple assault + indecent exposure involving two school-aged girls, and the school district removed him from duty and began its own investigation.  The Providence Journal
  • Two foreign nationals were sentenced in Providence for a burglary ring that targeted people of Asian descent, with one man receiving 48 months in jail and the other 33 months—both followed by three years of supervised release.  Go Local Prov

CULTURE NEWS

  • Providence hosts its free arts and culture festival PVDFest today and tomorrow — the event brings music, art and live performances downtown while city officials support it to boost the local creative economy.  The Providence Journal
  • Michael Lester, known for his time at The Dorrance, will open Mémère’s in October at Neptune hotel with a Quebec and French inspired menu including poutine and steak frites—honoring his family legacy.  The Boston Globe

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Providence Public Schools reported a drop in chronic absenteeism from 36.2% to 29.3% in one school year—education leaders credit strong teamwork among students, families, and educators for the progress. Governor McKee noted the improvement supports the goals of the Attendance Matters campaign.  ABC 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General William Tong and Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced Thursday that they will file a lawsuit in Rhode Island federal court to overturn the stop-work order issued on August 22—halting work on the nearly complete Revolution Wind project expected to save ratepayers millions.  Go Local Prov

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island officials confirmed an additional detection of West Nile virus in a mosquito sample collected last Monday in East Providence and said the statewide risk remains high. Officials advise residents to use EPA registered insect repellent, remove standing water, and wear long clothing—measures to reduce mosquito bites.  10 WJAR
